DULUTH — Total snowfall for the 2022-23 winter so far has surpassed the normal amount for the whole season, according to the National Weather Service in Duluth.

The typical total snowfall for the season at the NWS Duluth office is 90.2 inches. As of its noon Thursday observation, snowfall to date has reached 92.1 inches, NWS Duluth reported in a tweet.

Snowfall is expected to wrap up Thursday night in most areas of the Northland except the South Shore snow belts, the National Weather Service said.

An additional 1-3 inches of snowfall is forecast through 6 a.m. Friday for areas of the South Shore, including Bayfield and Ashland counties. Less than 1 inch is expected for interior Northwestern Wisconsin, the Twin Ports and elsewhere in Northeastern Minnesota.

The National Weather Service says dangerously cold wind chills of 20-30 degrees below zero are expected for northern Minnesota through Friday morning.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of "staff." Often, the "staff" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
