Yellowjackets report: Mutch’s all-around game leads Blue Devils past UWS in women’s basketball season opener
Former Superior Spartan Niya Wilson named UMAC women’s soccer offensive player of the year.
Sophomore guard Anna Mutch had 15 points, nine rebounds and four steals in just 19 minutes as Wisconsin-Stout started fast and rolled past Wisconsin-Superior 76-44 in their nonconference season opener Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2021, before 90 at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium in Superior.
Lizzy Olsem added 10 points and four rebounds for the Blue Devils, who raced out to a 21-7 lead after the first quarter and ended up having 13 players score.
Junior guard Christian Kaelyn was the lone UWS player to score in double figures with 14 points, including 2-for-4 shooting from 3-point range. Allie Zimmer added eight points, Makenna Guden had seven and seven rebounds and Kaija Davies chipped in six points for the Yellowjackets, who shot just 28% (14 of 50) for the game.
UWS will play the host, Wisconsin-Eau Claire, in the Blugolds’ Tip-Off Tournament at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12, at Zorn Arena in Eau Claire.

Yellowjackets sweep MIAC awards
Wisconsin-Superior earned its first UMAC women’s regular season and postseason titles this fall in unbeaten fashion, and now, to the victors go the spoils.
The Yellowjackets swept the UMAC’s top four all-conference honors announced Tuesday:
Offensive player of the year in sophomore Niya Wilson of Superior, defensive player of the year in senior Erin Schoborg, rookie of the year in goalie Jenna Lang and the coach of the year in Allison DeGroot.
In addition, freshman defender Halle Carlson (Hermantown) and senior midfielder Annah Schussman were named to the First Team, sophomore forward Allison Alessi was named to the Second Team and sophomore midfielder Lindrey Schendel was named honorable mention.
Wilson, who helped the Yellowjackets go 18-3-1 overall and 13-0-1 in UMAC play, led the conference in goals (20), points (51) and game-winning goals (eight) and was second in assists (11).
UWS takes a 17-game unbeaten streak into the program’s first NCAA Division III tournament when the Yellowjackets play No. 25 St. Catherine (14-1-3) at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, in St. Paul.
