The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference has named University of Wisconsin-Superior junior Ashley Martin its softball athlete of the week for the week of March 21-27.
Martin, a graduate of Superior High School, was the catalyst for the Yellowjackets as they closed their spring trip to Florida with a three-game winning streak and six victories in their last seven games.
Martin had a big week, batting .577 in eight games, with a double, two triples and five RBIs. She scored three runs and stole six bases as the Yellowjackets went 6-2.
"She missed the first four games of the year because she was still playing hockey, but once she got her timing down in Florida she really took off," said UWS head coach Roger Plachta. "She was an all-region player last year so we know what she's capable of, and I think she's only going to get better this year."
For the year, Martin leads the Yellowjackets in hitting with a .477 average. She leads in triples with three and has a team-leading .617 slugging percentage.

"She just brings so much to the plate for us. Her speed and her ability to handle the bat make her a really dangerous offensive player," Plachta said. "And she's great defensively, too. I think that she's easily one of the best catchers in the country. She's just a really solid, all-around player."
The Yellowjackets (13-5) now begin conference play with a pair of doubleheaders on the road. They will play at UW-Whitewater on Saturday and at UW-Oshkosh on Sunday. The games are scheduled to begin at noon and 2 p.m. both days.
