Yellowjacket men open Tuesday night against Bulldogs

The University of Wisconsin-Superior men's basketball team returns both of its top scorers from last season, but the Yellowjackets still have some holes to fill in their roster for 2013-14.

Seniors Jarrod Peterson and Bronson Byrne return to lead UWS.

Peterson, a 6-foot-1 guard, led UWS in scoring last season with 15.5 points per game, shooting .425 from the field and .382 from the arc. He also led the team in rebounds (5.7 per game) and steals (1.1 per game).

Byrne, a 7-0 center, averaged 11.5 points per game. He was third in rebounding (4.9 per game) and accounted for half of the teams block's with an average of 1.9 per game.

Superior's next four scoring leaders from last season are all missing from the team this year. Combined, they averaged 34.1 points per game for the Yellowjackets.

Picking up some of the slack will be senior Aaron Corry, a graduate of Northwestern High School. Corry averaged 5.8 points per game and 4.2 rebounds last year. He also added 18 blocks for the season, second only to Byrne.

Sophomore Brian Lindblom, a graduate of Spooner High School, will also assume a bigger role this year, and UWS has nine freshmen joining the team who will provide options.

In the Yellowjackets' exhibition game against the University of Sioux Falls, Peterson, freshman Tilyn Hollis, Lindblom and Byrne all scored in double figures. Corry and freshman Zach Schradle led UWS on the boards with eight rebounds apiece, and Byrne came up with two blocks.

The Yellowjacket men open their season Tuesday at the University of Minnesota Duluth. In last year's exhibition contest, the Bulldogs won 91-65.

UMD carries a three-game winning streak over UWS heading into Tuesday's game. The Yellowjackets' last victory over UMD came in 2009, when UWS won 93-80.

Paul Eberhardt begins his second season as head coach of the Yellowjackets. The UWS men finished sixth in the WIAC last year with a 5-11 conference record and a 9-17 overall record.
