Four members of the Superior High School wrestling team advanced out of the Hudson Division 1 Regional tournament on Saturday, Feb. 15.
Connor Krueger (106 pounds) and Wyatt Johnson (113) won regional championships, and Jason Thomas (132) and Caden Stone (160) advanced with fourth-place finishes.
“We had a nice tournament,” SHS coach Bob Coleman said. “It was fun to watch how the team’s confidence built as the day went on and it was very encouraging to see the guys begin to really build as a team and encourage each other to work hard and earn a chance to compete at the sectional meet.”
Krueger (34-4) defeated River Falls’ Travis Moelter by tech fall and Hudson’s AJ Henn 7-0, while Johnson (28-10) pinned Eau Claire Memorial’s Levi Guibord and River Falls’ Aidan Peterson, then won a 9-5 decision over Chippewa Falls’ David Hughes.
“Connor and Wyatt rose to the occasion and wrestled very tough,” SHS coach Bob Coleman said. “I’m really proud of this year’s team because they have worked hard at wrestling and have worked hard to become a team that just encourages each other. The team has been a joy to watch grow over the season.”
Thomas improved to 22-17 at 132 pounds, and Stone is now 29-9 at 160 pounds.
The sectional meet is Saturday, Feb. 22, at Wisconsin Rapids.
The top two finishers in each weight class advances to the 77th annual WIAA State Tournament Feb. 27-29 at the Kohl Center in Madison.
