“We’ve been working hard to get better every week,” SHS coach Bob Coleman said. “It’s been a very challenging season with injuries and wrestlers being sick, but the guys just keep making adjustments and make the best of what cards they have been dealt.

“We have talked about staying focused and having the mindset to not be distracted with all the things going on around us and we had some wrestlers really step it up today. I’m very proud of every one of our wrestlers.”

Up next for the Spartans are the Bloomer Blackhawks in the Heart O’ North Super Duals at 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, at Ladysmith.

Girls hoops

The Spartans improved to 7-7 on the season with their 55-43 non-conference win at Virginia on Tuesday, Jan. 28.

“Virginia was a good win for us, we’re getting a little better each week,” SHS coach Dave Kontny said. “They are a tough match-up for any team with their size, but I thought our ball pressure helped eliminate some of that advantage.”

The Spartans had three players score in double figures led by Niya Wilson’s 19 points. Kaileigh Miller added 17 points, and Savannah Leopold had 12.

Wilson’s and Leopold’s totals included three 3-pointers apiece.

Virginia (12-7) was led by Kaylee Iverson’s 16 points.

“We’ve been hit hard by the flu to the point of not practicing (Wednesday, Jan. 29), but the kids hung in there and played as hard as they could,” Kontny said. “Our scoring balance was nice having three players in double figures, and they were 12-6, so we feel good about the win.”

The Spartans play at Eau Claire Memorial at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1, and host Duluth East at 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 4. The East and Superior boys follow at 7:15 p.m.
