Johnson, Stone advance to sectionals

Two members of the Superior High School wrestling team advanced out of the WIAA Division 1 regional Saturday, Feb. 9, at Chippewa Falls.

Wyatt Johnson (106 pounds) and Caden Stone (152) finished second in their weight classes and will now compete in the sectional tournament Saturday, Feb. 16, in Menomonie.

Johnson improved to 26-14 after receiving a bye, defeating Hudson’s Jacob Fanning, losing to River Falls’ Josie Bartishofski, and winning by rule over Fanning.

Stone (35-5) received a bye, pinned Eau Claire Memorial’s Brady Guibord, lost by tech fall to River Falls’ Nathan Fuller and won by rule over Guibord.

As a team, Superior finished in eighth place with 67 points.

“We really had some good efforts,” SHS coach Bob Coleman said. “Wyatt and Caden had great tournaments in very tough weight classes. I’m proud of our team this year. Wrestling is a very tough sport and very unforgiving. But our guys just kept working each week to get better and that they did.

“We had a number guys compete Saturday very hard and performed the best have have all year. It was fun to be a part of that.”

The top two finishers at each weight at Menomonie will advance to the state tournament Feb. 21-23 in Madison.
