Tigers’ Nelson wins state wrestling title

Abigail Nelson, a junior at Northwestern High School, took first place in the 96-pound weight class Sunday at the Wisconsin Wrestling Federation’s Girl’s State Wrestling Tournament in Poynette.

Nelson, the No. 1 seed, received a bye the first round then advanced to the championship match with a pin of No. 4 Alexis Winecke in 2:18.

In the championship match she defeated No. 2 Raquel Rojano 5-3.

There were 96 high school girls competing at the girls state wrestling tournament.

Nelson, also a member of the NHS boys team, finished in fourth place in Saturday’s WIAA Division 2 regional at 106 pounds.
