The Superior High School wrestling team finished in fourth place in the Heart O’ North Conference Tournament Saturday at Bloomer.

Northwestern won the team title with 179 points. The Spartans had 145 points.

“It was an outstanding team effort,” SHS coach Bob Coleman said. “We had 11 out of the 13 wrestlers place in the top six - that’s outstanding.”

The Spartans were led by Oscar Flaherty and Logan Stone, who went undefeated to win their respective weight classes.

Flaherty (220 pounds) pinned three straight opponents, including Spooner’s Joshua Carroll, to win his third HON title.

“Oscar lost to Carroll in our dual and for the last two weeks we worked on a strategy to beat him and Oscar was very open to make the changes needed,” Coleman said. “We also worked very hard on staying mentally calm and focusing on the things he can control and it all paid off.”

Stone went 3-0 at 152 pounds.

“Logan had a great day,” Coleman said. “This championship was the result of a lot of time in the weight room and his willingness to learn.”

Also for the Spartans, Jack Androsky finished second at 126 pounds; and Caden Stone (138) and Dylan Lowney (285) finished third.

One of Androsky’s wins was over Hayward’s Hunter Rhea, who had beaten him twice earlier this season.

“That was a big win and allowed Jack to finish one place above his No. 3 seed,” Coleman said. “Both Caden and Dylan lost their first-round match but regrouped and battled back. That’s not an easy task, but because of the support of their teammates, and their commitment to the team, they just never quit and battled.”

Up next for Superior is the WIAA Division 1 regional Saturday at New Richmond.

The top four finishers in each weight division will qualify for the sectional tournament Feb. 17 at Wausau West.
