The Ladysmith Lumberjacks won a back-and-forth match with the Superior High School wrestling team 39-30 Thursday night in the SHS gym.

After Superior led 12-0 and then trailed 24-12, the match was eventually tied at 24-24 and then 30-30 with two matches remaining.

The Lumberjacks took a 33-30 lead when Ryan Vollendorf’s reversal with 20 seconds remaining in the third period gave him a 2-0 win over Joe Carter at 170 pounds.

Ladysmith sealed its victory with Ethan Jaworski’s first-period pin of Lars Root at 182 pounds.

“It was very exciting dual,” SHS coach Bob Coleman said. “I’m very proud of our guys, they have worked hard and battled hard tonight but just came up a little short.”

Prior to the match, Superior honored its seniors and their parents. Seniors honored were Jack Androsky, James Kirchoff, Branden McClure, Logan Stone, Gabe Anderson, Joe Carter, Sam Oosten, Gunnar Gronski, Oscar Flaherty, DJ Martin and Dylan Lowney.

“It also was a special night for our seniors,” Coleman said. “It was their last home match in their career and they fought right to the end. These young men have done a great job leading this team this year and with so many first-year wrestlers that can be a tough job.

“I would have to say one of their strong character traits is kindness. They seem to always be using actions or words to encourage others. When they are sitting around waiting for weigh-ins they have a lot of fun. It’s neat to see that team cohesion.”

Superior got off the match off to a good start with Gunnar Gronski pinning Kyle Nelson with 1:23 remaining in the second period and Oscar Flaherty winning by forfeit for a 12-0 lead. Gronski was leading his match 8-0 at the time of the pin.

Ladysmith won the next six matches to open up a 24-12 lead. Derek Vollendorf (113) won by pin, and Isaiah Rolli (285), Elijah Pearson ((106), Tyler Dicus (120), Trent Vollendorf (126) and Jordan Jaworski (132) won decisions.

Superior tied the match at 24-24 with first-period pins by Canden Stone (138) and Brandon McClure (145).

The teams traded pins and made the score 30-30 as Ladysmith’s Nathan Roach pinned Alex Schlais at 152 and Superior’s Logan Stone pinned Anthony Vandertie at 160.

Up next for both teams is the Heart O’ North Conference dual championships at 5 p.m. on Jan. 26 at Cumberland.

The Spartans finished second in the HON behind Northwestern and will go up against the No. 2 team from the south, which will be determined early next week.

Superior will then be at Cloquet on Jan. 30 and then wrap up the regular season at the HON Conference championships Feb. 3 at Bloomer.

“We have a couple weeks before the conference tournament to work out some of the kinks so we are ready,” Coleman said.

SPARTAN SPIN: In JV action at 113 pounds, Ladysmith’s Colin Dicus pinned Superior’s Brittany Phillips with 1:12 remaining in the third period.
