University of Wisconsin-Superior freshman goalkeeper Bailey Henderson was named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Athlete of the Week following her strong performance last week.
She is the first Yellowjacket women’s soccer player to earn weekly honors since 1998 when Fiona McLeod was honored.
Henderson backstopped the Yellowjackets to a pair of shutouts last week. On Sept. 16 she made six saves as the Yellowjackets won 2-0 at Finlandia. She followed that up on Saturday with eight saves in a 1-0 overtime win at Lakeland College.

“The start of the season hasn’t been easy for our team with some matches against good opponents and a lot of injuries, but the players have showed a tremendous work ethic and a great attitude throughout and Bailey is a big part of that,” UWS coach Morgan MacLean said. “She has come in and made a big impact on our team as a freshman and that is something that doesn’t happen all that often at the college level.
“There’s no reason to think that this is anything but the beginning for her as she is only scratching the surface of how good she can be.”
Spanning the four matches, Henderson has a shutout streak of 298:57, having last given up a goal in the second half of the match against Bethany Lutheran on Sept. 13.
For the year Henderson has played every match in goal for the Yellowjackets and has fashioned a record of 3-4-1 with a goals against average of 2.96 and a save percentage of .707. All three of her victories have been by way of the shutout.
The Yellowjackets (3-4-1) will get their first taste of WIAC action in 2014 at 11 a.m. Saturday when they travel to UW-Platteville to take on the Pioneers.
