White Bear Lake blanks Superior

The Superior High School boys hockey team suffered a pair of losses this, falling to Duluth Denfeld 6-2 Thursday and 5-0 to White Bear Lake on Saturday. Both games were played at Wessman Arena.

The Bears won the battle of Welch’s on Saturday as AJ Welch scored four goals and dished out an assist as they improved to 8-0 on the season. The Bears are also 5-0 in the Suburban East Conference.

On the other end of the ice, freshman goaltender Caden Welch finished with 17 saves as the Spartans fell to 3-7.

Wyatt Newpower also scored for WBL and Tom Giller assisted on all four of AJ Welch’s goals, including two in the first period.

Superior had plenty of chances during the final 8:33 of the first period starting with Grant Hanson hitting the right post. The Spartans finished the period failing to score on three straight power plays.


Superior went on another power play 1:11 into the second period, but it was White Bear Lake that took a 3-0 lead when AJ Welch completed his hat trick with a short-handed goal on a breakaway.

The Bears made it 4-0 with Newpower’s power-play goal with 10:25 left in the second period.

AJ Welch completed the scoring with a one-timer from the slot 2:48 into the third period.

Bob Parenteau had 14 saves for the Bears.

The Spartans host Hudson at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

SPARTAN SPIN: Superior was called for five penalties, including Shane Tetzlaff’s major penalty for checking from behind with 3:53 remaining. Denfeld 6, Superior 2

The Spartans opened play in the Lake Superior Conference with the loss to Denfeld.


Cody Budisalovich scored twice and Ben Kidd, Nick Thompson, Dylan Michaud and Adam Shykes all scored once as Denfeld improved to 6-2 overall and 1-1 in the LSC.

Anthony Bronson scored for Superior when he stuffed home the rebound after Tyler Nystrom’s shot from the point was stopped by Denfeld goaltender River Alander. Hanson also assisted on Bronson’s fourth goal of the season.

Alander finished with 22 saves in the win.

Peyton Flanders stopped nine shots in the first period and Caden Welch had eight saves in the second and third period.

Kidd’s first goal of the season gave the Hunters a 1-0 lead 1:19 into the game. Budisalovich and Thompson also scored in the opening period for a 3-0 lead.

Budisalovich’s second goal of the game, and fifth of the season, made the score 4-0 just 18 seconds into the second period.

Michaud’s tally came at 1:34 and Bronson’s power-play goal came at 4:18.

Shyke’s third goal came on a power play with 8:34 left in the second period.

Superior will play White Bear Lake (Minn.) for the first time at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Wessman Arena.

SPARTAN SPIN: Superior is now 34-46 all-time against Denfeld. The Spartans’ last win over the Hunters was 4-2 on Jan. 24, 2012.
