GRANTSBURG - Snowmobile Watercross racers are once again gearing up for the World Championship Snowmobile Watercross this weekend in Grantsburg.

The 41st annual event will take place on Memory Lake and include more than 100 racers, including top competitors from the United States and Canada, competing on open water in both drags and oval classes.

The International Watercross Association sanctions watercross racing and this weekend’s event is considered the world championship within the yearly circuit.

The event begins with qualifying races starting at 1 p.m. Friday and continuing all day Saturday. Finals conclude with the grand finale, a six-man, eight-lap pro-open event, Sunday afternoon, determining the 2017 world champion.

Other features include: Vintage racing (open to anyone) starting at 4 p.m. Friday; the Pit Crew “Dash for Cash” race; and the second annual world championship canoe race at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Along with vendor displays and booths offering merchandise, souvenirs and food lining the lake, there will be street dances both Friday and Saturday evenings and a  fireworks display at dusk Saturday.
