Eleven kills from Brynn Hessel weren't enough for Northwestern to keep a high-flying St. Croix Falls squad from a 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-15) Heart O' North volleyball sweep on Thursday, Oct. 14, 2021 in Maple.

Hessel added six digs and Brinley Tonn had 20 set assists.

St. Croix Falls are the undefeated HON champs.

Northwestern has a Saturday home game vs. Barron before beginning WIAA Regional play on Tuesday at Bloomer.

Superior 4, Washburn 1

Jakob Kidd had one more hat trick as the Spartans finished their regular season with a home win over the Castle Guards at NBC Spartan Sports Complex.

The Spartans will host the first home playoff game in program history on Tuesday vs. Chippewa Falls (7 p.m.)


Eagles boys win league title

The Solon Springs boys claimed the Indianhead Conference title on Thursday at the league meet in Glidden.

They placed five runners in the top 10 for a decisive victory with 25 points to runner-up Drummond's 49.

Mike Brown of Butternut took home top honors (17:28.5), but Dylan Taggart came in second for Solon (17:55.7). Tarver Sellwood snagged fifth place, leading home teammates Isaac Dickenson and Ben Fromm.

On the girls' side, Solon Springs got the short end of a razor-thin three-way finish.

Washburn won the league title with 50 points, just one better than South Shore and three better than the Eagles.

Washburn's Sofia Borchers (21:21.6) and Olivia Soltero went 1-2, with the best Solon Springs finisher being fourth-place Nona Thompson (22:25.2). Zoe Smith ended up eighth for the Eagles.
