Wisconsin-Superior grabbed its first volleyball victory of the season by the closest of margins, winning the fifth set by the minimum for a 3-2 (24-26, 25-18, 19-25, 25-11, 15-13) victory over Northland to open the Subway Stinger Classic at Mertz Mortorelli Gym on Friday, Sept. 10, 2021.

Alexie Pryd led all players with 22 kills, while Megan Holz racked up 29 assists and Jenna Anderson 31 digs for UWS. The Yellowjackets led 9-1 in the fifth set then hung on for dear life. Northland recovered from 13-7 down to 14-13 but UWS won the match on an attacking error.

Nebraska Wesleyan took the nightcap from the Yellowjackets 3-1 (31-33, 26-24, 25-16, 25-15). Maiana Stark led UWS with 20 kills and Pryd added 16. Anderson kicked in 36 more digs.

UWS (1-3) continues the tournament on Saturday with games against Concordia (Minn.) and Macalester.

OT goal sinks UWS women's soccer

Friday's non-conference women's soccer match for UWS at Augsburg in Minneapolis started sweet but ended sour as the Auggies took a 2-1 win with a goal in the second overtime period.

Niya Wilson put the Yellowjackets up with a goal in the 12th minute. It was canceled out in the 56th when Augsburg's Jaelyn Nedelcoff scored. The teams went to extra time before Jennifer Bobaric ended it in the hosts' favor 12 minutes in.

UWS split goalkeeping duties, with Jenna Lang making five saves and Morgan Philiber four. The Yellowjackets (1-2) host Edgewood on Sunday.
