The Superior High School volleyball team won a back-and-forth battle with the Duluth East Greyhounds Tuesday, Oct. 1, in Duluth.

The host Greyhounds won the opening set 26-24, and Superior took a 2-1 lead with wins of 25-18 and 25-19.

East tied it up with a 25-15 win, and Superior clinched the non-conference match with a 15-8 win in the fifth set.

The Spartans were led by Zoie Cole, 34 set assists and eight digs; Lexie Lohman, 11 kills and 30 digs; Abby Dolsen, 30 digs; Destiny Herring, 16 digs; and Berkley Fruend, eight kills.

Rylee Stevens led East with 32 set assists and 24 digs. Nicole Becks added 20 digs; Emily Monahan had 10 kills and three blocks; Ayla Oltmanns had eight kills and 10 digs; and Riley Thoreson had nine kills and 15 digs.

Up next for the Spartans is the Proctor Invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5. Superior then hosts Rice Lake at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 8.

Boys soccer

Keegan Chastey’s goal on a penalty kick in the 74th minute gave the Duluth Denfeld Hunters a 3-2 win over Superior Tuesday, Oct. 1, at Public Schools Stadium in Duluth.

Trailing 1-0, Jakob Kidd gave Superior a 2-1 lead with his 26th and 27th goals of the season.

Chastey tied it up for Denfeld in the 62nd minute then scored on the PK 12 minutes later.

Viet Nguyen and Keyten DeGraef assisted on Superior’s goals and Nate Olson finished with six saves in goal.

Demetri Regas had nine saves for Denfeld (8-6, 5-1).

The Spartans (10-2, 4-2) host Ashland at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, and will play in the Wisconsin Rapids Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 5.
