The Superior High School rebounded from a first-set loss to defeat the Northwestern Tigers 3-1 (23-25, 25-10, 25-22, 25-20) in non-conference volleyball action Tuesday, Sept. 24, in the SHS gym.
The Spartans led 7-1 at the start of the first set, but the Tigers answered and got within 9-7.
Superior followed by opening up a 19-11 lead, but once again the Tigers rallied and tied the game 21-21. The teams traded points until the Tigers scored the final two points for the 25-23 win.
The Spartans started fast again in the second set, but this time wouldn’t let it slip away.
Superior opened with an 8-0 lead and eventually led 19-6 before winning 25-10.
It was the Spartans turn to rally in the third set.
The Tigers led early by scores of 4-1 and 5-2, Superior gradually took an 17-16 lead, and the game was tied at 21-21 before the Spartans scored four of the final five points for the win.
The Spartans clinched the victory with a five-point win in the fourth set.
“Superior is a very strong team that does not make many mistakes,” NHS coach Charlie Hessel said. “Except for the second set, we were right there with them.
“I’m proud of how our girls battled each and every point. We were forced to play really good defense and I feel like we did that. It was excellent volleyball on both sides of the net.”
Superior was led by Zoie Cole, 29 set assists; Lexie Lohman, 11 killsand 32 digs; Izzy Swanson, eight kills and eight blocks; Abby Dolsen, 21 digs; and Jill Hughes, 15 digs.
The Tigers were led by Tayva Plasch, 35 set assists and 10 digs; Brooke Ogren, 19 digs and six kills; Brynn Erickson, 15 digs and 14kills; Jaydon Goette, seven kills; and Brynn Hessel, six klls and 10 digs.
Superior hosts Proctor Thursday, Sept. 26; and plays at Duluth East Tuesday, Oct. 1. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.
The Tigers will host the Zosel Tournament at 9 a.m. Saturday, and is at Cumberland at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 1.
