The University of Wisconsin-Superior volleyball team followed up a 3-1 record in its own Subway Stinger Classic Sept. 6-7 at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium, with a sweep of Macalester College Wednesday, Sept. 11, in St. Paul.
The Yellowjackets picked up their fifth straight win with the 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-21) win over Macalester.
Lexi Oeltjen led the Yellowjackets (5-5) with 18 kills while Gina Baertsch totaled 17 set assists.
In the Subway Stinger Classic, UWS topped both Nebraska Wesleyan and Crown in four sets on Saturday, Feb. 7. The Yellowjackets beat Wesleyan (6-2), 25-22, 20-25, 25-23, 25-15, and rallied to beat Crown (2-4) after dropping the first set, 25-22. UWS won the next three sets, by 25-18 counts.
Against Wesleyan, Cami Sletta and Brylee Colligan — Superior's two all-tournament team selections — had 17 and 10 kills, respectively. Sletta hit .316 with two blocks and two digs, and Colligan added 12 digs for a double-double. As a team, UWS collected 14 blocks.
UWS split its two games on Friday, Sept. 6, sweeping Finlandia (0-4) after dropping a five-set decision to St. Scholastica.
The Yellowjackets dispatched Finlandia in just 43 minutes by scores of 25-8, 25-12 and 25-8.
Against CSS, Sletta tallied a career-best 24 kills, and Megan Holz and Cassy Teff combined for 55 of the team's 65 assists.
The 'Jackets won the first (25-23) and third (30-28) sets, with St. Scholastica prevailing in the second (26-24), fourth (25-15) and fifth (15-13) to take the match.
‘JACKET JOTTINGS: Sletta was named UMAC Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week. She totaled 71 kills last weekend with just 16 errors in 142 attacks. She also collected six blocks and nine digs while tallying a career-high 24 kills in a five-set loss to St. Scholastica.
UWS picked up a pair of UMAC honors with sophomore goalkeeper Madison Gutekunst being named the Defensive Player of the Week and sophomore forward/midfielder Annah Schussman the Offensive Player of the Week.
Schussman tallied a career-high five points in the Yellowjackets' first victory of the season Sunday, 4-1, at Alverno (Milwaukee).f She matched her career high with two goals — both in the second half — against the Inferno. Schussman took 11 shots in a 1-0-1 week, including eight at Alverno.
Gutekunst earned her first shutout of the season — and seventh of her career — in a scoreless draw at Lakeland Saturday, Sept. 7, making a season-best 10 saves.
She also helped the Yellowjackets to their first win of the season, playing the first half and earning the victory at Alverno. Gutekunst left the match up, 2-1, after making two saves.

Senior forward James Bruce was named UMAC Offensive Player of the Week.
Bruce scored the first and last goals of the match in a 3-1 victory at Macalester on Sept. 4. His goals came on just two shots.
In 40 career matches, Bruce has 21 goals and eight assists for 50 points.
UWS then suffered its first loss of the season 2-1 to Augsburg Saturday, Sept. 7, at Edor Nelson Field in Minneapolis.
Superior’s last loss was 2-0 to Luther on Sept. 2, 2018.
The Auggies (3-0-1) scored twice in an 11-minute span in the second half and held off a late rally from UWS (3-1).
Lionel Vang gave Augsburg a 1-0 lead in the 55th minute. UWS goalkeeper Dalton VonKaenel stopped Vang's initial shot, but Vang scored off the rebound.
It went to 2-0 on Daniel Hedstrom’s goal with an assist from Vang.
Eric Watson’s goal on a penalty kick cut the lead in half for UWS.
VonKaenel and Garrett Kaelin had nine saves for UWS.

UWS senior Joey Cummings is the UMAC Men's Golf Player of the Week.
Cummings was individual medalist, helping UWS to a team win in the UMAC Preview at Pebble Creek Golf Course on Sept. 5. He shot a 74 as the 'Jackets won by 10 strokes over St. Scholastica.
UWS finished sixth in the Frank Wrigglesworth Blugold Invitational Sept. 8-9, shooting a 321 Monday for a two-round total of 620.
Cummings fired the Yellowjackets' best round on Monday, a 77. He finished tied for 12th overall at 151.
Charles Martin shot 80 to finish in a tie for second at the Northland College Invite Wednesday, Sept. 11, at Chequamegon Bay Golf Club.
The Yellowjackets finished second with a score of 342, five strokes better than host Northland and 33 better than North Central. St. Scholastica won the team title with a 327.

Alayana Tulip led the way with a 91 to finish second individually. Superior carded 404, topping host Northland by 23 strokes for the team title.
