University of Wisconsin-Superior right-handed pitcher Travis Elwood was named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week for pitchers.

In a pair of appearances last week Elwood, a senior from Ramsey, Minn., helped the Yellowjackets go 3-1 with a split at UW-Stout and sweep on the road at No. 2 ranked UW-Stevens Point.

On Wednesday in Menomonie, Elwood pitched just one inning, giving up an earned run on one hit in the Yellowjackets’ 8-6 loss to Stout.

He followed that up with a masterful performance on Sunday. In a game that was started on Saturday and halted after one inning, Elwood came on in relief the next day and pitched eight strong innings, giving up three earned runs on six hits as the Yellowjackets won 8-3 over the Pointers.

For the week, Elwood went 1-0 with a 4.00 earned run average. He allowed seven hits, walked two and struck out six. For the year Elwood is 3-1 with a 2.32 earned run average. He has walked eight and struck out 33 in 31 innings pitched.

“Travis has been a rock on the mound for us this year,” UWS coach Nick Bursik said. “He has pitched a lot of innings and has given us nothing but quality throughout the season. He’s a big reason why we are off to the nice start that we are this season. I’m happy for him because he had a rough couple of seasons with injuries leading up to this year and wanted to go out on a strong note. He put in a lot of hard work last summer and during the off-season to get to this point and his start to the year is his reward.

“Hopefully it keeps going and he keeps getting better as the year continues.”

The Yellowjackets (12-7, 4-4 WIAC) were supposed to make their home debut for the season on Thursday, but the lingering winter has kept snow on the field and with more snow in the forecast, the four-game series was forced to move. The Yellowjackets will now play their “home” series on the road at UW-Platteville. The games against the Pioneers are scheduled to begin at noon on Thursday and Friday.
