UWS ROUND-UP: Skinner, UWS blanks UWRF

The University of Wisconsin-Superior men's hockey team went 1-1 over the weekend, winning 5-0 at UW-River Falls Friday night and losing 4-2 to UW-Stevens Point Saturday at Wessman Arena.

The University of Wisconsin-Superior men's hockey team went 1-1 over the weekend, winning 5-0 at UW-River Falls Friday night and losing 4-2 to UW-Stevens Point Saturday at Wessman Arena.

Troy York netted a hat trick and Cole Skinner posted a 36-save shutout in Friday’s win at River Falls.

York scored once in each period to give him five goals this season and Connor Hamonic and Ryan Carlson also scored for the Yellowjackets.

Cole Skinner picked up his first collegiate shutout with 26 saves.

The shutout was just the second in the last 107 games  for UWS.

Tanner Karty scored two goals, including an empty-netter with 1 second remaining, in the Pointers’ win Saturday at Wessman Arena.

Jerry Miettunen gave the Yellowjackets the lead 2:31 into the game before Point netted three straight goals.

Connor Hamonic’s goal with 1:33 left in regulation closed the gap to 3-2.

Skinner, who had made 30 saves, but allowed the deciding empty-net goal.

UWS (9-12-2 overall, 2-3-1 WIAC) hosts UW-River Falls Thursday and plays at UW-Eau Claire Friday. Both games begin at 7 p.m.

Women’s basketball

UWS clinched the UMAC regular-season title with a 60-28 win over Crown College Saturday evening in Mertz Mortorelli Gym.

Defense was the key once again for the Yellowjackets as they allowed just five points in the opening two quarters and taking a 35-10 lead into halftime.

Former Superior Spartan Hailey Kontny led UWS with 17 points, while Justine Larson added 11 points with six rebounds, three assists and a steal.

Desiree Davis had 13 points to lead Crown (9-11, 4-7).

The Yellowjackets, who improved to 44-0 in league play since joining the UMAC in 2015, host Northwestern at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Men’s basketball

The Yellowjackets pulled to within 66-64 on Shaq Coleman’s 3-pointer with 1:21 remaining but could get no closer in falling at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.

Timothy Wendel had 25 points and 12 rebounds to lead Crown (11-10, 7-5 UMAC), but he missed a 3-pointer and a free throw in the final minute that gave UWS hope.

Coleman finished with 22 points to lead the Yellowjackets (5-17, 3-10), while Colton Williams added 14 points and 10 rebounds. Coleman missed a layup with 18 seconds remaining and Vid Milenkovic missed a 3-pointer in the closing seconds for UWS.

UWS is 1-7 in its last eight games with the last three losses by a total of five points.

The Yellowjackets host Northwestern at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Tennis

The UWS women lost to St. Mary’s 8-1 Sunday morning in the Lydia Theiring Fieldhouse.

The Yellowjackets’ win came at No. 3 doubles where Megan Dulong and Charolotte Zangs defeasted Sheyenne Bauer and Marissa Kinzer, 8-5.

UWS will make its first road trip of the season at noon Sunday at Hamline in Minneapolis.

The UWS men’s match with St. Mary’s Saturday was canceled. UWS will play at noon Saturday at UW-Eau Claire.
