Saturday was much of the same for the University of Wisconsin-Superior basketball teams in a UMAC doubleheader against Bethany Lutheran in Mankato, Minn.

The Yellowjacket women won their 47th straight conference game with a 67-60 victory, while the UWS men played yet another close, losing 72-71.

 

Women’s basketball

The Yellowjackets found themselves trailing 46-42 entering the fourth quarter before outscoring the Vikings 25-14 over the final 10 minutes.

Justine Larson’s layup with 3:41 remaining gave the Yellowjackets 60-58 lead, which they never relinquished.

Hannah Norlin had 20 points and eight rebounds to pace UWS, which held Bethany Lutheran (18-6, 11-4) scoreless for the final 1:54.

Larson and Hailey Kontny both finished with double-doubles as Larson had 14 points and 11 assists, while Kontny had 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Jade Tucker also had nine points on 4-of-7 shooting.

The Vikings’ Brooke Henning led all scores with 21 points. Haley Sandin added 16.

Superior (20-4, 15-0) wraps up the regular season by hosting North Central at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Men’s basketball

UWS lost its seventh game by three points or less on Saturday when its rally fell short against the first-place Vikings.

Shaq Coleman and Vid Milenkovic poured in 28 and 20 points, respectively, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a 16-point halftime deficit.

Coleman also had five rebounds and five assists; Milenkovic added 10 rebounds; Nate Kalien had 11 points and Colton Williams grabbed 15 rebounds.

The Yellowjackets (6-18, 4-11) outscored Bethany Lutheran (16-8, 12-3) 41-26 after the break.

UWS plays its final game of the season when it hosts North Central at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Men’s hockey

UWS lost 4-1 Thursday night to UW-River Falls and 7-3 Friday night at UW-Eau Claire.

Eddie Matsushima had a hat trick and Aussie Miller had three assists to lead UWRF Thursday night at Wessman Arena.

Ian Ecklund gave UWS a 1-0 lead 4:55 into the game.

Bruno Birzitis and Daniel Litchke assisted on Ecklund’s 15th goal and Cole Skinner finished with 23 saves.

On Friday Lucas Kohls scored two goals and the Blugolds converted three power-play goals in the WIAC win before a crowd of 1,146 at Eau Claire.

Zach Dyment made 14 saves for Eau Claire (15-9, 5-2 WIAC).

Ecklund had two goals for the Yellowjackets (9-14-2, 2-5-1).

The WIAC playoffs begin Friday, Feb. 16.

Cross Country

The Yellowjackets picked up USTFCCCA awards Friday afternoon, earning All-Academic team honors.

The men’s team earned their fifth-straight Division III scholar team of the year award with a combined 3.17 GPA, and the women earned their 11th-straight scholar team of the Year with a 3.25 combined GPA.

Along with their greatness in the classroom, the teams both competed will this season. The men took home the UMAC Championship back in October, and the women placed third overall.

 

Women’s hockey

The Yellowjackets wrapped up home play in the regular season with a tie and loss against UW-Stevens Point.

The teams skated to a 1-1 overtime time Friday night and the Pointers won 5-2 Saturday afternoon.

UWS led 2-1 after one period Saturday on goals by Maggie Craggi and Mikayla Goodin, but the Pointers scored the next four goals.

Sky Brown made 28 saves to preserve Friday’s tie.

Lilly Johnson scored with 57 seconds left in the second period for the Pointers and Saige Patrick scored midway through the third period for the Yellowjackets.

The Yellowjackets (14-8-2, 3-4-2) wrap up the regular season tonight at St. Scholastica.
