UWS RDP: Women fall at CSS; Weston honored

The College of St. Scholastica women's hockey team won the latest version of the "Bridge Battle" with the University of Wisconsin-Superior with a 5-2 victory before 126 fans Tuesday, Dec. 11, at Mars Lakeview Arena.

The College of St. Scholastica women’s hockey team won the latest version of the “Bridge Battle” with the University of Wisconsin-Superior with a 5-2 victory before 126 fans Tuesday, Dec. 11, at Mars Lakeview Arena.

Four of the Saints’ five goals were scored on the power play.

After Rachel Anderson scored an even-strength goal in the first period, Paige Forsman, Courtney Bloemke, Mariah Haedrich and Kayla Kasel added power-play goals as the Saints improved to 8-3-1.

Bloemke also dished out two assists, along with Taylor Thompson and Amber Tilander.

Kaleigh Martinson and Jenna Curtis scored for the Yellowjackets (4-9-1).


Lexi Thomeczek finished with 31 saves for the Saints, compared to 26 saves for Superior’s Catherine Johnson.

UWS is off now until playing Finlandia Jan. 4-5 in Hancock, Mich.

Weston honored UWS sprinter Jake Weston has been named Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week.

The sophomore from Virginia, Minn., finished third in the 400-meter dash in 52.98 at The Opener, hosted by Scholastica, Saturday, Dec. 8.

His time was the top NCAA Division III competitor in the event and also represents the top mark in the conference this season.


Weston also paced the 4x400-meter relay team to a third-place finish with a 52-second split.
