The University of Wisconsin-Superior men's hockey team had its season opener spoiled with a 3-1 loss to the St. John's Johnnies Friday night before a Wessman Arena crowd of 857.

The Yellowjackets scored first at 4:11 of the first period. SJU goaltender Saxton Soley made a save on a shot that came from the side, but a Johnnie put the puck into the net when attempting to clear it from out front.

Superior's Jordan Shockley was credited with his first collegiate goal with assists from Wes Judnick and Anton Svensson. The goal also came three seconds after a St. John's penalty ended.

The Johnnies tied it up around five minutes later when Tyson Fulton flipped the puck over UWS goaltender Drew Strandberg after taking a pass from Kevin Becker.

The eventual game-winning goal came 8:38 into the second period when John Haeg and Justin Hocksprung got behind the UWS defense and scored with a 2-on-0 advantage.

The Johnnies sealed the victory when Dan McNamara made a nifty move around a UWS defenseman in the right circle and beat Strandberg with a high wrist shot. Becker picked up his second assist on the goal that was scored with 13:44 remaining in the third period.

"We got a good start, but we just weren't consistent," UWS coach Dan Stauber said. "I think it was sloppy all around. I felt we had some good practices coming into the game, but it was unbelievable on how sloppy it was, we were trying to make plays and the puck was like a hand grenade on our sticks."

"There were a couple of collapses, a couple of breakdowns behind our net. We're just going to have to come back tomorrow and clean up some areas."

Strandberg finished with 27 saves for UWS and Soley, a graduate of Eau Claire Memorial, had 15 saves for SJU.

UWS hosts Concordia-Moorhead at 7:05 p.m. Saturday.

"This was our first game and we expected some mistakes, but these are things we can clean up," Stauber said. "Concordia beat this team last weekend, so we know we have our hands full."
