UWS kickers win finale, gets No. 3 seed

The University of Wisconsin-Superior men's soccer team was given the No. 3 seed for this week's WIAC Soccer Tournament.

The Yellowjackets will play at No. 2 UW-Whitewater at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The other semifinal game had UW-Platteville playing at UW-Oshkosh, also at 6 p.m. Wednesday. The winners will play in Saturday's championship game at the home of the highest remaining seed.

The UWS men wrapped up its regular season with a 4-2 win over Carthage College Friday night in Kensoha.

Senior Ben Royce scored four goals as the Yellowjackets improved to 10-6-3 on the season.

Three of Royce's goals came in the first half. His fourth goal was unassisted in the 85th minute. His first goal came on a penalty kick, his second was unassisted and his third was assisted by Karl Schmidke.

Alexander Marquis scored for Carthage.

Goalkeeper Zach Harwerth recorded 12 saves to help the Yellowjackets improve to 10-6-3 on the season.

Volleyball

UWS completed its season with a split at the Gustavus Triangular Saturday in St. Peter, Minn.

Buena Vista University (17-12) topped the Yellowjackets 21-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-14, 22-20 in the first match, but UWS rebounded against Gustavus Adolphus (11-20) with a sweep -- 25-21, 25-23, 25-20.

Against Buena Vista, Kitty Tynen led UWS (17-14) with 17 kills, while Jessica Zimmerman paced the Yellowjackets with 10 kills against Gustavus. Keely Deadrick made 83 assists and 26 digs in the two matches.

Cross Country

UW-Superior's Katelyn Huberty, a senior from Hermantown, was nominated for the WIAC Judy Kruckman Women's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete Award.

Winning the award was UW-La Crosse's Rachel Schroeder.

In order to be nominated for the scholar-athlete award, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.50 grade point average. In addition, she must be in her last year of competition, or on schedule to graduate this academic year, and have competed for a minimum of two years.

Christina Micheletti was named to the WIAC All-Sportsmanship Team at Saturday's WIAC Women's Cross Country Championship at Kilkarney Hills Golf Course in River Falls.

UWLC won the seventh first-place trophy in program history, and first since 2006, with 34 points to exceed UW-Stevens Point's second-place sum of 78 points. UW-River Falls finished third with 86 points, six-time defending champion UW-Eau Claire fourth with 86, UW-Oshkosh fifth with 119, UW-Platteville sixth with 129, UW-Stout seventh with 200, UW-Whitewater eighth with 232 and UW-Superior ninth with 286.

UWLC also won its second straight title. The Eagles earned their league-leading 32nd championship plaque, and seventh in the last 10 years, with 53 points to nip Eau Claire's second-place total of 58 points. Oshkosh placed third with 66 points, Stout fourth with 110, Platteville fifth with 138, Stevens Point sixth with 152, Whitewater seventh with 207, Superior eighth with 223 and River Falls ninth with 233.

All nine WIAC teams will return to action on Nov. 16, and participate in the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional at Saukie Golf Course in Rock Island, Ill. The regional event will be hosted by Augustana College (Ill.). The NCAA Division III Championship is scheduled for Nov. 23, at L.S. Ayres Athletic Complex in Hanover, Ind., and will be hosted by Hanover College (Ind.).
