A team of novice curlers from the University of Wisconsin-Superior returned from the National College Curling Championship tournament held March 11-13 in Chicago with the silver medal in its division.
The UWS club team, with a total of seven years of experience among its members, defeated teams from Boston University, Villanova University and the University of Denver to advance to the medal match, where it fell to Northwestern University to settle for second place in its class.
Team members include skip Tony Nelson of Cameron; vice skip Jared Pehler of Arcadia, Wis.; second David Stahlberg of Iron, Minn.; lead David Fenner of Washburn; and alternate Zach Mountain of Ashland.
UWS defeated Boston University 9-2 in six ends, Villanova 10-0 in six ends and Denver 10-3 for a berth in the championship match, where it lost to Northwestern 8-7 in eight ends.
The National College Curling Championship Bonspiel has four divisions, ranging from Division 1 for teams with the most experience to Division 4 for teams with the least experience.
