UWS baseball team splits at Oshkosh; softball team off to 0-4 start in WIAC

The University of Wisconsin-Superior baseball and softball teams opened Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play by going a combined 0-6 over the weekend.

The Yellojacket baseball team lost a pair of games at UW-Oshkosh by scores of 2-0 and 6-5, while the UWS softball team lost 8-0 and 8-0 Saturday at UW-Platteville and 6-0 and 4-0 Sunday at UW-La Crosse.

The baseball team bounced back Monday with a 10-4 win at Oshkosh after losing the opening game 11-1.

Baseball

The Yellowjackets fall to 8-5 overall and 0-2 in the WIAC with the losses at Tiedemann Field in Oshkosh.

UWS had its chances in the opener, stranding 10 runners on base, including two in the first and seventh innings.

UWO (9-5, 2-2) took a 1-0 lead on Robbie Kleman’s single in the fourth inning and a 2-0 advantage on Neil Hebert’s double in the seventh.

Superior took a 5-3 lead into the sixth inning of game two before Oshkosh tied the score on two-out, run-scoring singles by Tyler Kozlowski and Kleman.

Oshkosh’s Trey Demler led off the seventh inning by hitting a home run on the first pitch thrown by UWS’s Jake Lewis.

Peter Jewell picked up the win after allowing just one hit and holding UWS scoreless during the final four innings.

In Superior’s win Monday at Oshkosh, the game was tied 2-2 until the Yellowjackets scored seven runs in the seventh inning and once in the ninth.

Spooner’s Sam Holden led the Spartans at the plate going 4-for-5 with a double and four RBIs. Wyatt Soderquist added a three-run double, Tom Fairbanks tripled and singled, Derek Cagel singled twice and Matt Vold singled once.

Damian Wilblin (2-1) picked up the win for UWS, allowing four runs on five hits in six innings. He also struck out six and walked one. Graham Miller picked up the save with three scoreless innings.

Tony Remund homered for Superior’s only run in the opener. UWS also got hits from Soderquist, Vold, Brady Flaherty and Holden.

UWS is scheduled to play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Wednesday at UW-Stout.

 

Softball

After losing twice at Platteville on Saturday, UWS ran into a hot UWLC squad on Sunday as the Eagles improved on their best start ever with a pair of shutouts.

The Eagles received dominant pitching performances from Jessie Carignan and Heather Grelle to improve to 15-3 overall and 4-0 in the WIAC. The Eagles went 14-4 in 2008 and 2010.

In Sunday’s opener, UWS got a double from Melissa Clark and singles from Elle Niemela, Katie Wilke, Sasha Fjeran and Sally Linzmeier.

In game two, Britnee Blake had two hits and Niemela and Katie Wilke had a single each.

Linzmeier had Superior’s only hit in Saturday’s opening game at Platteville and then two of Superior’s hits in game two. Kristen Halder had the Yellowjackets’ other hit.

UWS (17-8, 0-4) will play doubleheaders at UW-River Falls Saturday and UW-Stout Sunday. Action both days begins at noon.
