Urbaniak's 18 points leads Tigers past Rails

The Northwestern Tigers wrapped up their regular season with a 41-35 win at Spooner Thursday night.

The Tigers improve to 5-17 overall and 4-10 in the Heart O' North Conference. Spooner falls to 3-17 and 2-12.

Liz Urbaniak led the Tigers with 18 points, which included a 3-pointer and five free throws in the fourth quarter.

The first quarter was back-and forth with ties at 4, 6 and 8 before fittingly ending in a 10-10 tie.

Spooner scored the first seven points of the second quarter for a 17-10 lead, but Urbaniak nailed a 3-pointer and Aliex Friend made a deuce to get the Tigers within 17-15.

Northwestern's rally was short-lived as the Rails finished the first half with a 6-2 run for a 23-17 lead.

The Tigers outscored the Rails 18-7 in the third quarter for a 35-30 lead.

NHS started the third quarter with an 11-5 run which tied the game at 28-28. Aly May made a couple of baskets during the run and Kelcee Janigo's basket tied it up.

Nicole Yadon's basket after an offensive rebound and Katy Konczak's basket in the lane game the Tigers a 32-28 lead with two minutes left in the third quarter. One free throw by May and two by Urbaniak made it a five-point lead heading into the final quarter of play.

The fourth quarter was scoreless until Urbaniak made a free throw with 1:13 remaining in the game.

Morgan Johnson made a 3-pointer for 38-35, but Urbaniak sealed the win with three free throws.

The Tigers open the WIAA playoffs at Chetek-Weyerhaeuser at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
