The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference announced its first set of weekly awards for the 2015-16 year and four University of Wisconsin-Superior student-athletes were honored by their new conference.
Men’s soccer swept the awards, with Trevor Laroche-Theune and Ben Wilhelm grabbing offensive and defensive athlete of the week awards, respectively. Bailey Henderson was named defensive athlete of the week for women’s soccer and Anton Svensson earned the weekly award for men’s golf.
In a season-opening loss to St. Catherine, Henderson started in goal and made 13 saves.

Laroche-Theune had a big week offensively for the Yellowjackets, figuring in the scoring of all four goals. Tuesday at Augsburg he assisted on the first goal of the game then scored the game-winning goal in the final minute of regulation. Saturday at Luther Laroche-Theune scored his second goal of the season, then Sunday Laroche-Theune scored the only goal of the match in the waning minutes of the second half to send the Yellowjackets to victory.
Laroche-Theune leads the Yellowjackets in scoring, a year after not recording a point for the entire season.
Wilhelm stopped four of five shots he faced in the season opener, a 2-1 road win over Augsburg. Wilhelm made seven saves to earn his first career shutout, a 1-0 win over No. 17-ranked Wartburg.
Svensson got the golf season off to a strong start. Tuesday at the Saints Triangular, Svensson shot an 80 and finished one stroke back for a second-place finish. Then at Friday’s UMAC Preview Svensson was the men’s individual medalist, shooting a 74 to win the event by a stroke.
