Turner, Panthers capture first SWAC bowling title

ARLINGTON, Texas --The Prairie View A&M University Panthers topped Alabama A&M on Sunday to claim its first Southwestern Athletic Conference bowling title.

ARLINGTON, Texas --The Prairie View A&M University Panthers topped Alabama A&M on Sunday to claim its first Southwestern Athletic Conference bowling title.

The tournament was held at the International Training and Research Center on the International Bowling Campus.

Bowling for Prairie View A&M is former Superior Spartan Sharita Turner, who bowled a 162 in game one.

In the double-elimination bracket, Prairie View A&M had to beat top-seed Alabama A&M twice to capture the title. The Panthers responded with a 4-2 victory in the opening match to set up the deciding match for the title.

In the final match, Prairie View A&M won the first two games before the Bulldogs cut the lead to 2-1 with a 205-156 victory in Game 3. The Panthers responded with a 199-152 victory in Game 4, but Alabama A&M stayed alive with a 214-204 in the fifth game.

Prairie View A&M, however, posted a 179-161 victory in Game 6 to take the title, 4-2.

Freshman Nicole Kleutgen of Alabama A&M had the high tournament average at 212.6 to earn Most Valuable Player honors. She was joined on the all-tournament team by Danielle Walker of Alabama State, the SWAC Freshman of the Year; Prairie View A&M's Lejewlia Lewis (Waco High School); Shannon Pearson of Southern; and Jackson State's Dyanna Scott. Alabama State's Andrew Chatmon was voted coach of the year by league coaches.
