CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Troy Bell will be among eight former athletes and one of the winningest head coaches in football history inducted into the Boston College Varsity Club Hall of Fame this fall.
Bell, Boston College’s all-time leading scorer in men’s basketball, will be honored along with Scott Clemmensen (2001 - hockey); Bill Guerin (2005 - hockey), Dan Koppen (2002 - football), Colin McLane (1992 - men’s lacrosse), Kate (Antos) Mikkelson (1995 - women’s hockey), Erik Storz (1998 - football), and Tom O’Brien, the winningest coach in BC football history with a record of 75-45.
Also inducted through the Veteran’s committee is Henry Woronicz (1942), who was on the 1940 championship football team.
Bell, who last played for the Eagles in 2003, is Boston College’s career scoring leader with 2,632 points. A two-time Big East Player of the Year, Bell was the USBWA District I Player of the Year after averaging a conference-best 25.2 points per game his senior season. The 781 points he scored that year is still the program record.
A native of Minneapolis, Bell earned Associated Press All-America accolades, averaging 27.8 points per game in Big East play, which set the conference’s single-season record.

He still holds career records in 3-pointers (300), free throws (810) and free throw percentage (.868) and led Boston College to the 2001 Big East Tournament title and was the tournament MVP.
A two-time All-American, and three-time All-Big East First Team honoree, Bell was the 16th overall selection in the 2003 NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics, but was traded on draft night to the Memphis Grizzlies.
After a six-game stint with the Grizzlies, Bell played 12 seasons overseas, ending with San Lorenzo (Argentina) in 2016. He currently resides in Minnesota with his family.
Bell, who went to high school at Holy Angels in Richfield, Minn., is the son of Maggie and Fred Bell Jr. and the grandson of Fred and Carol Bell. Maggie is from Memphis, Tenn., while Fred, Carol and Fred Jr. are Superior natives.
The honorees will be inducted in a ceremony on Oct. 6 in the Welch Dining Room in Lyons Hall. The class will also be recognized at halftime of the Eagles’ football game against Virginia Tech on Saturday, Oct. 7.
