Tigers' Kirkpatrick fifth at state wrestling tournament

Northwestern High School's Calen Kirkpatrick finished in fifth place of the 138-pound weight class of the WIAA Division 2 State Wrestling Championships this weekend at the Kohl Center in Madison.

Northwestern High School’s Calen Kirkpatrick finished in fifth place of the 138-pound weight class of the WIAA Division 2 State Wrestling Championships this weekend at the Kohl Center in Madison.

Kirkpatrick, who was competing in his fourth state tournament, won his opening-round match at 138 pounds Thursday night with a pin of Westby’s Ryan Knight in 4:47.

Kirkpatrick was sent to the third-place bracket with a 10-4 loss to Eric Bauer of Kewaskum Friday morning then rebounded to defeat New London’s Garrett Ruckdashel 5-2.

Kirkpatrick was pinned by Aaron Barh of West Salem/Bangor in the consolation semifinals then rebounded with a 4-3 decision over Dean Neff of Jefferson in the fifth-place match.

Kirkpatrick ends the season with a record of 35-8.

Also in action for Northwestern was Morgan Berggren, who was pinned in 1:25 by Oconto Falls’ Dan Ausloos in his opening match Thursday at 285 pounds.

Berggren’s season ends with a record of 28-7.
