The Northwestern High School volleyball team improved to 15-3 on the season with a 3-0 victory Monday night at Hurley.

The Tigers defeated the Midgets 25-14, 25-20 and 25-9.

NHS was led by Anna Morgan, 16 kills and six ace serves; Katy Konczak, 11 kills; and Melissa Hogfeldt, 28 set assists.

The Tigers (5-0 in the Heart O' North Conference) host Barron at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Cross country

The NHS cross country team traveled to the University of Minnesota over the weekend to compete against 50 of the top teams in the country. The girls team placed 14th and the boys team took 22nd place.

Winning the girls event was the team from Shorewood High School, near Milwaukee. The Anoka runners won the boys team event.

"This meet, the competition is much like what we would see at our state meet, so it was a great experience fro our kids," said NHS coach John Woodbury.

Freshman Olivia Amber made the award stand for the girls, placing 15th out of 417 runners.

"Olivia Amber really stepped it up with an outstanding performance," Woodbury said.

Northwestern's Results

Girls: Elli Teige, 88th; Jordan Johnson, 93rd; Angela Snow, 119th; Beth Ann Gurske, 121st; Tess Nelson, 133rd; and Nicolette Amber, 199th.

Boys: Zach Yepma, 77th; Nathan Nelson, was 87th; Jari Mackie, 106th; Travis Sznaider, 129th; Bob Tahtinen, 139th; Seth Korhonen, 172nd; and Austin Berube, 266th.
