The Northwestern High School basketball teams combined to go 3-0 late last week with the boys defeating Ladysmith and South Shore and the girls beating Hayward for the first time in eight years.

Thanks to a 31-9 second-half advantage the Tigers pulled away from the Ladysmith Lumberjacks for a 54-31 victory Thursday night in Ladysmith.

The Tigers led just 12-11 after one quarter and 26-22 at the half before outscoring the Lumberjacks 17-4 and 11-5 in the third and fourth quarters, respectively.

Steven Kastern and Alex Tecker led the Tigers in scoring with 15 and 13 points, respectively. Mike Lindsay and Brandon Copp chipped in with six points apiece, and Riley Stowers added five.

Riley Herbes led Ladysmith (0-2, 0-1) with 12 points.

Against South Shore, the Tigers trailed 32-24 after three quarters before outscoring the Cardinals 19-6 in the fourth quarter and pulling out a 43-38 victory.

Tyler Little led the Tigers with 14 points. Riley Stowers and Alex Tecker added seven points apiece, Steven Kastern and Matt Lindsay had six points each, and Logan Moreau had three points.

Blake Reijo, who plays on the Northwestern baseball team, led South Shore with 21 points, which included three 3-point baskets. Zeke Nieder added 10 points.

The Tigers, now 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the Heart O’ North Conference, play at Hayward (2-0, 1-0) today and at Chetek (2-0, 1-0) Friday. Both games begin at 7:15 p.m.

Tiger girls

The Northwestern girls won 40-39 at Hayward Friday night.

The Tigers trailed 9-7 after one quarter and 19-13 at the half.

They outscored the Hurricanes 11-9 in the third quarter, but still trailed 28-24 heading into the final eight minutes.

Northwestern pulled out the one-point victory by outscoring Hayward 16-11 in the fourth quarter.

Amanda Ogren led the Tigers with 12 points, and Katie Stark had a game-high 18 for the Hurricanes (1-2, 1-1).

Northwestern (3-1, 2-0) hosts Chetek (0-3, 0-2) at 7:15 p.m. Thursday.
