HAYWARD -- The Northwestern and Hayward golf teams finished with the same team scores at Thursday's Heart O' North Conference triangular, but the Hurricanes emerged victorious on the tiebreaker to hand the Tigers their first setback of the season.

Hayward and Northwestern each fired 157s, but the Hurricanes won the tiebreaker, which is the better score from the No. 5 player. Spooner finished with 200.

"With Hayward on its home course we knew we would have to shoot something special," NHS coach Gary Swanson said. "Even to be able to tie a team like that on their home track is a good thing. I know each guy will think back to a few shots here and there that slipped away so the loss does not come down to just one guys score."

Northwestern's Gabe Dinkel was medalist with a 1-under-par round of 35.

"Gabe's game is really coming around right now," Swanson said. "The swing changes he made over winter are beginning to pay off."

Other Northwestern scores were Justin Alexson, 38; Ian Lattery, 40; and Peter Lindsay and Grant Pearson, 44s.

Ryan Garay shot a 44 for the Northwestern junior varsity.

Hayward was led by Blake Orton's even par round of 36.

The Tigers, Hurricanes and Rails, as well as the Superior Spartans are competing in the two-day Scott Miller Invitational in Hayward. Action began today and will continue at 9 a.m. Saturday.
