The Northwestern High School girls basketball team opened its season Tuesday with a 44-40 win over Chetek-Weyerhaeuser in Maple.
The Tiger girls started slowly, trailing 13-5 after the first quarter, but held Chetek-Weyerhaeuser to six points in the second quarter to tie the game at 19-19 at halftime.
The score remained tied, 31-31, after the third quarter. The Bulldogs took a three-point lead early in the final quarter on a free throw and a layup, but Northwestern answered with four consecutive free throws to go up 36-35. The Tigers led for the remainder of the night, and the game ended with a flurry of scoring as both teams combined to score 10 points in the final minute.
Northwestern returns to action Monday with a home game against the Ashland Oredockers.
