The University of Wisconsin-Superior men's tennis team defeated Martin Luther 9-0 on Wednesday, April 21, at the Yellowjackets Outdoor Tennis Complex.
UWS opened the match by taking all three doubles matches while only dropping six games. Andre Luiz de Melo Guedes and Lorenzo Korehisa Silva beat Seth Koelpin and Marcus Sims, 8-1, while Gergo Potz Nagy and Michael Janes topped Jonah Schultz and Benjamin Foos, 8-2. Anthony Michels and Miles Dempsey then beat Josiah Koelpin and Elijah Schulz, 8-3.
In singles, Potz Nagy defeated Jonah Schultz, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 1 and Janes beat Seth Koepin, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2.
At No. 3, de Melo Guedes took care of Foss, 6-0, 6-2, and at No. 4, Jacob Zacharias dropped one game to Sims, winning 6-1, 6-0.
Korehisa Silva dispatched Josiah Koelpin, 6-0, 6-4, while Gavin Mangan closed the match with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Elijah Schultz.
With the win, UWS improved to 7-3 overall and 3-1 in the UMAC. Martin Luther fell to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in the league.
Next up, Superior travels to face St. Olaf on Saturday, April 24, at 11 a.m.
Women's team smashes Martin Luther
The UW-Superior women's tennis team earned a victory over Martin Luther with an 8-1 victory over the Knights in UMAC action on Wednesday, April 21.
The Yellowjackets' No. 1 doubles pair of Maya Callaway and Emily Wald opened the match with an 8-1 defeat of McKenzey Crowley and Josephine Bieberitz. Kallie Olson and Grace Nelson then beat Tatum Bollmeier and Dana Pietrzyk, 8-5, before Chiyono Owa and Olivia Roberts topped Charis Glende and Hannah Broring, 8-1.
In singles action, Callaway beat Crowley, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1, Wald beat Bieberitz, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 2 and Owa beat Bollmeier, 6-0, 6-1, at three.
Olson defeated Pietrzyk, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 4 and Nelson beat Broring, 6-3, 6-3.
The Knights' only point on the day came at No. 5 singles where Glende beat Roberts, 6-0, 6-0.
UWS, which evened its record to 5-5 with the win, moved to 3-1 in the UMAC. MLC dropped to 0-5 overall and 0-3 in the league.
The 'Jackets were scheduled to host St. Scholastica on Thursday, April 22.
