Team Superior wins Minnesota state bowling tournament

Team Superior won its third Minnesota High School State Varsity Bowling Tournament in a three-game shootout with Faribault/Waseca/Medford on Saturday at Memory Lanes in Minneapolis.

Team Superior won its third Minnesota High School State Varsity Bowling Tournament in a three-game shootout with Faribault/Waseca/Medford on Saturday at Memory Lanes in Minneapolis.

Superior defeated FWM in the first game 193-183; lost the second game 255-205; then rebounded to win the third game 252-226.

Members of Team Superior are Justin Petrey, Jimmy Lehto, Terrill Gordon, Jordan Anderson, Masen Meyers, Alek Wallin and Kaleb Rufer. They are coached by Carl Mencel and Cody Anderson.

Team Superior qualified third after a seven-match qualifier with a 203 average for 14 games.

In bracket play, Superior defeated Lakeville South in two games, 225-158 and 218-203, and Champlin Park, 204-200.

Simley finished in third place, Champlin Park finished fourth and Monticello was the consolation champions.

Superior also won Minnesota state championships in 2010 and 2006.

This year's Minnesota state tournament included 126 varsity teams, 108 junior varsity teams and more than 1,540 student athletes competing statewide.
