The Superior YMCA Whalers swim team completed the 2018-19 swim season and the record board was updated recently.
For the second year in a row, the Whalers finished in the top five at the YMCA state meet, taking fourth place. The team also placed ninth at the North Central Regional Swim Meet out of 40 teams. Last year, the team placed 24th.
Of the team record 106 swimmers who competed at sectionals, a team record 103 qualified for the state meet, and a team record 28 swimmers went on to qualify for the North Central Regional in Des Moines on March 16-17.
Fourteen of the 28 swimmers in Des Moines then achieved time qualification for the 2019 AAU Junior Olympics on July 25-28 in North Carolina.
The team broke 25 team records this season and three relays and five individual events took home state championship honors.
Mason Larsen was a three-time winner at state among boys ages 11-12. Larsen won the 50-yard freestyle, the 100 IM and set at Whaler record in the 50-yard backstroke.
Larsen was also a member of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay with Travis Elling, Nolan Bird and Paolo Pagnucci.
Rosa Palmer (girls 9-10) won the 50-yard backstroke and Travis Elling (boys 11-12) won the 100-yard freestyle.
The Whalers also set team records in two 400-yard freestyle relays. Aiden Pagnucci, David Melander, Dane Bird and Madden Stone broke the record for boys 9-10 and Elling, Bird, Paolo Pagnucci and Larsen set the boys 11-12 record.
The remaining winning relay was the Boys 11-12 200-yard freestyle relay (Paolo Pagnucci, Evan DeMars, Elling, Larsen).
