Northwestern High School’s Kordell Swanson finished tied for 24th place at the WIAA Division 2 State Golf Championships Tuesday, June 4, at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison.

With Tuesday's second-round being cut to nine holes following a rain and lightning delay, Swanson carded an 8-over-par 44. Along with his 6-over-par 78 on Monday, Swanson finished with a 14-over-par 122.

“Monday was a great day weather wise to golf,” NHS coach Ryan Teal said. “Some players took advantage of that and shot some really nice scores, including Kordell, who shot 78 (38-40).

“But the pleasant temps on Monday gave way to cold and windy Tuesday morning and unfortunately, Kordell and Trevor struggled a bit due to difficult weather conditions. I know the boys were looking forward to improving on their Tuesday morning front 9 44's, but they would not get that chance.”

Joe Forsting of Egerton finished in first place with a two-day total of 108. Forsting carded a 5-under-par 67 on Monday and a 5-over-par 41 Tuesday.

Forsting admits that he made a few mistakes on Tuesday, going 5-over par for nine holes. Playing in the final group, he said the weather delay got under his skin.

"A little bit," he said. "There were some extra mistakes that I made that I tried to avoid. I was able to finish out (with a bogey) from the bunker on No. 9 to hold on, though."

Rice Lake junior Simon Cuskey shot 37 to finish at 109, a stroke back of Forsting.

Swanson's teammate, Trevor Priem, moved up two spots to finish in 44th place with a two-day score of 136. Prien carded a 19-over 91 on Monday and a 9-over-par 45 on Tuesday.

“Overall, I am extremely proud of Kordell and Trevor and really the whole team,” Teal said. “We accomplished great things as a team this year and I was very pleased to have the opportunity to coach not one, but two individuals at the state tournament.”

DIVOTS: Madison Edgewood won its third consecutive state team championship.
