Former Superior Spartan defenseman Tim Smith is the third player from this year's Owatonna (Minn.) Express hockey team to commit to a Division I program.

The Owatonna Express has announced the first-year defenseman has committed to Providence College (Hockey East) for next season.

Smith is the 17th player who competed in January's NAHL Top Prospects Tournament to commit to a Division I program following the event.

"We're very happy for Tim," Express coach Pat Cullen said. "It's a great opportunity for him and we're excited to see that his hard work and commitment has paid off."

Smith, an 18-year-old from Superior, totaled eight goals for 22 points in 57 regular-season games for the Express this season.

Smith, who graduated from SHS in 2008, was recently named to the 2009 All-Central Division team in the North American Hockey League.

Tim is the son of Superior's Lyndon and Vickie Smith.

NOTES: Smith will be playing in the same conference as Mike Sislo (New Hampshire), also from Superior, and Chris Connolly (Boston University), who played for Duluth Marshall.

"Tim is very excited," Vickie Smith said. "He really liked the college, the coaches, the other players that he met.

"He and his dad have already joked about him playing against Sislo and Connelly."

The Express won their first round in the playoffs. The Express will travel to Bismark on Friday to play the Bobcats in the next round of the playoffs.
