Led by Alyssa Correll’s 38 points, the Superior High School girls basketball team rallied past Grand Rapids for a 71-65 victory Tuesday night in the SHS gym.
The Spartans trailed 39-31 at the half but outscored the Thunderhawks 40-27 in the second half to improve to 2-1 on the season.
Phil Roe, Spartan head coach, said Correll broke Superior’s single-game scoring record with her 38-point performance. The previous mark of 35 points was set last season by Jessica Lindstrom, who is currently playing at UW-Green Bay.
“Like I have repeatedly said over the years, Alyssa is the best pure shooter I have ever coached, and tonight people saw that,” Roe said. “She has gotten so much better this season and a lot of that goes back to this summer lifting weights at UWS, playing as many games as she can from March to November and constantly being in the gym working on her game.”

Correll, a senior guard, made nine 3-pointers during Tuesday’s game.
The Spartans also got 12 points from Mackenzie Kmecik and eight points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals from Ellie Leadstrom. Tailor Schuster led the team with eight rebounds.
Jordin McCartney and Taylor Kane led Grand Rapids with 17 and 16 points, respectively.
“This was a great team victory tonight,” Roe said. “We battled a tough Grand Rapids team and came back from eight down at the half to pull this one off.”
Superior hosts Proctor Friday and plays at Chippewa Falls Tuesday. Both games begin at 7:15 p.m.
SPARTAN SPIN: SHS senior guard Malley O’Brien returned to the court Tuesday after missing the start of the season with an injury.
“It was great to have Malley O’Brien back; she and Natalie Olson created a lot of pressure on the ball and forced a lot of turnovers,” Roe said. “In my opinion it changed the whole game in the second half.”
Roe said MaryLynne Leadstrom also made her presence felt in the paint and set good screens for her teammates.
