Superior girls finish in third place in 10U state hockey tournament

The Superior Spartans 10U girls hockey team finished in third place in the 2012 WAHA State 10U Girls Hockey Tourament over the weekend at the Superior Ice Arena.

The Superior Spartans 10U girls hockey team finished in third place in the 2012 WAHA State 10U Girls Hockey Tourament over the weekend at the Superior Ice Arena.

The Spartans went 1-1 on Saturday defeating the Appleton Wizards 2-1 in triple overtime and then losing to the Western Wisconsin Stars (New Richmond area) 4-1 Saturday evening.

Superior rebounded to defeat the Coulee Region team from the Onalaska/LaCrosse area 2-1 in the fourth overtime on Sunday afternoon.

Spartan forward Ailey Rude scored the game-winning goal when she picked off an errant clearing pass, put a move on the Coulee Region defender and put the puck through the legs of goaltender Brynna Banuelous 44 seconds into the fourth overtime.

After a scoreless first period, Coulee Region opened the scoring 5:09 into the second period but Superior responded about five minutes later when Brooklyn Burger took a feed from Rose Ion and found the back of the net on the far side.

There was no scoring in the third period, which was followed by three scoreless overtime periods.

Carissa Mudrak had 19 saves for the Spartans in earning the win, including nine in the overtimes.

Hudson defeated the Western Wisconsin Stars (New Richmond area) in the championship game 2-1 in overtime.

In Superior's game against Appleton, Claire Casey scored the winning goal one minute into the third overtime with an assist from Ion.

Rude gave Superior a 1-0 lead at 8:12 of the second period with helpers from Casey and Morgan Love.

Appleton tied the game up 2:50 into the third period on Kourtney Koster's unassisted goal.

Mudrak was the winning goaltender for the Spartans.

After a scoreless first period in Superior's second game, Jade Williams gave the Stars a 2-0 lead with goals 31 seconds apart. The first goal came five seconds into a Superior tripping penalty.

Lauren Graham made it a 3-0 game after two periods and it went to 4-0 45 seconds into the third period on Georgia Hammer's goal with an assist from Graham.

Superior's only goal of the game came five seconds into a power play as Casey won the face off to Mackenzie Mike, who scored from between the circles.

Mudrak finished with 15 saves for Superior, while Caitlyn Erickson had four saves for the Stars.

Remaining members of the Superior U10 team are Charlesa Prior, Destiny Holmes, Stephanie Paine, Isabel Fanta, Jillian Reuille, Paige Lach,, Ava Gerard, Taylor Routley and Lucy Drougas.

The team is coached by Erica VanDamme, Doug Ion, Pat Casey and Kevin Mudrak.
