SUPERIOR — After a slow start to the season, the Superior Bantam B Hockey team won the state title over the weekend in Sun Prairie.

Their state tournament run began with a win over Chippewa Falls in early February, said coach Brian Raygor.

The first game was against Waunakee, the top-ranked team in the division. Superior won 4-3 with three goals and an assist from Cameron Laporte; a goal and an assist from Kellen Smith; and assists from Gryfen DeGraef, Dylan Johnson and Owen Wells.

The second game was against Eau Claire, with Superior on top with a score of 6-5. Again, the Spartans were led in scoring by Laporte with two goals and two assists; Parker Lystig with two goals; DeGraef added another goal and assist; and Smith with a goal.

The championship game was against Ozaukee, with Superior winning 4-0. Laporte continued his hot streak scoring twice and adding an assist; DeGraef had another goal and assist; Sam Hubbard had two assists and Johnson scored an empty net goal to seal the victory. Brady Bachand was in net during the championship to earn the shutout.

"This team had to fight for every win all year and continued to improve throughout the entire season," Raygor said. "Everything came together in the end to come home with the championship. Other than playing Eau Claire early in the year, they had not played against any of the teams they faced over the weekend."

The team consists of: Landon Modeen, Kellen Smith, Marcus Madsen, Parker Lystig, Dylan Johnson, Jesse Anderson, Michael Fiegle, Cameron Laporte, Owen Wells, Gryfen DeGraef, Sam Hubbard, and goalies Brady Bachand and Wilhelm Lewis.

In addition to Raygor, the team is coached by assistants Anna Greiner and Eric Smith, with help from manager Amy Fiegle.
