Jim Erickson starred for the Superior Senior High School as the Spartans showed talent, balance and depth to win the Class A title in the Grand Rapids Invitational track and field meet with 90 points in a fast field of eight other high schools. Placing second was Duluth East with 89 points, and Duluth Central came in third with 78 points. Erickson won the 100-yard dash, equaling the meet record of 10.4 seconds, and he set a record in the 220-yard dash at 23.2 seconds. He also was a member (with Chuck Swanson, Tom Mortorelli and Jerry Carlson) of the victorious 880-yard relay team. Swanson gave the Spartans their other first-place finish in the 440-yard run. Junior Stephanie Podgorak served up a three-hitter and struck out five batters to pitch the Superior Senior High School softball team to a 4-3 decision over Morgan Park. (1982)
