After nearly a month of waiting, the Superior High School softball team played its first home game of the season Tuesday.

The Spartans defeated Hermantown 4-0 to improve to 4-1 on the season.

All of Superior’s runs came in the second and third innings.

Tailor Schuster began the scoring with a two-RBI double in the second inning to bring in Rachal Fregin and Mackenzie Kmecik.

In the third inning, Jessica Lindstrom reached base on error and Taylor Nelson followed with a walk. Kaitlin Heinen then brought Lindstrom home with double, and Gabby Gidley drove in Nelson with a sharp single.

Freshman Brandie Goldberg threw a complete game to get the pitching win. She gave up three hits while walking four and striking out four.

Kylee Hoff was the losing pitcher for Hermantown, allowing five hits while striking out three in six innings.

At the plate Macy Francisco, Jordyn Thomas and Tess Johnson all collected hits for the Hawks.

The Spartans were also in action Monday as they traveled to Grantsburg to face the Pirates.

Superior took an early lead with four runs in the first inning, but Grantsburg answered with three runs in the bottom of the first and another in the second to tie the game at 4-4. The Pirates then put the game away with five runs in the bottom of the fourth as they won 9-6.

“Macy Hansen pitched a nice game against us; she kept our bats pretty quiet,” said Amy Zembo, Spartan head coach.

Hansen had 11 strikeouts with four walks and four hits in six innings pitched.
