Spartans go 2-1 in Orlandi Invite

The Superior High School Spartans went 2-1 in its own 4th annual Ron Orlandi Spartan Baseball Invitational over the weekend at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.

The Spartans finished tied with the Ashland Oredockers and Esko Eskomos, with the Oredockers being crowned the tournament champs after tiebreakers.

Superior’s slate included a 10-4 win over Esko Friday night; and a 7-3 loss to Ashland and 19-0 win over Greenway on Saturday.

The Spartans, who defeated Grand Rapids 8-7 in a make-up game Monday, host Cloquet at 4:30 p.m. today (Tuesday).

Superior wraps up the week with a doubleheader at Chippewa Falls at 3:30 p.m. Friday.

 

Superior 10, Esko 4

Esko jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the Spartans answered with four runs in the bottom of the first and never trailed again as they scored two runs apiece in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Superior had seven hits, including a double and single by Gunnar Hansen.

Mason Moen also had a single and two RBIs; Derek Fender had an RBI single; Isaac Rios, Judd Erickson and Conner Fonger had a hit each; and Devin Samarzia and Ben Rhodes knocked in a run each.

Rhodes, Erickson, Brandon Wing and Drake Samarzia pitched for Superior.

Peyton Koskela started for Esko had both of the Eskomos two hits.

Ashland 7, Superior 3

The Oredockers used a five-run third inning to dispose of the Spartans.

Moen had two of Superior’s five hits; Wing doubled; and Rhodes and Rios singled.

Wing walked and scored on an error in the third inning.

Moen singled with one out in the fourth inning, moved to third on Wing’s double and scored on Rhodes’ single.

Isaac Rios took the loss for Superior. He lasted two innings, allowing two hits and four runs while striking out one.

Ashland had nine hits, including two apiece from Bo Bratley, Earl Kraft and Zach Lindenberg.

Superior 19, Greenway 0

Superior wrapped up the tournament with a five-inning win over the Raiders.

The Spartans had 11 hits, led by Erickson, who tripled, singled and knocked in six runs.

Rhodes added a triple, single and three RBIs; Dominic D’Auria tripled, single and drove in two runs; Will Schorr singled twice; Fender, Wing and Max Curtis all had two RBIs; Devin Samarzia drove in a run; and Drake Samarzia and Derek Fender singled.

Wing, Derek Fender and Moen combined to pitch a one-hitter for Superior. Wing, the winner, struck out two in the first three innings, and Moen struck out three batters and walked one in the fifth inning.

Christian Nemayer led off the game with a double for Greenway’s only hit.
