The Superior High School girls soccer team opened its season Friday evening with a 2-1 double overtime loss at Rice Lake.
“A tough loss, but it was our first time outside at all this year and the girls are still getting used to each other on the field,” said Len Albrecht, Spartan head coach.
The game was tied 1-1 after the first half. Rice Lake’s Rachel Heinecke scored on a header at the 12-minute mark, and Malley O’Brien answered for Superior when she scored on a penalty kick at 26:29.

The teams then played a scoreless second half to force overtime.
Neither team scored in the first 10-minute overtime period. The game would have been declared a tie if the second overtime period ended without any scoring, but Rice Lake’s Hannah Schweitzer put in the game winning goal at 98:49 - 1 minute and 11 seconds before the end of the second overtime period.
The Spartans will play at Somerset today and New Richmond Thursday. Both games begin at 4:30 p.m.
