SPARTAN ROUNDUP: SHS girls rally past the Rails

Jessica Lindstrom's two-out two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the Superior High School softball team a 12-11 win over the Proctor Rails Tuesday evening at Liebaert Field.

Proctor led the entire game until the seventh inning, including 7-1 in the second inning and 11-4 in the third.

Alison Wainionpaa, who took over pitching for Taylor Thompson in the third inning, kept Proctor off the board in the final three innings while the Spartans fought their way back with three runs in the fourth and sixth innings and the winning runs in the seventh.

Thompson led the Spartans offensively, going 4-for-5 with two RBIs. Kaitlyn Mergren added a pair of two-run singles and Lindstrom was 3-for-4 with three RBIs.

The Spartans, who finished with 14 hits, also got two hits from Kaitlin Heinen and Ari Jago and one each from Taylor Nelson, Kari Miller and Rachal Fregin. Tailor Schuster also knocked in a run with a sac fly.

Karen Horvath was 2-for-3 with three RBIs for Proctor, now 5-3 overall and 0-1 in the Lake Superior Conference. Melinda Nelson, Brianna Mehling, Karly Kruger and Katie Leonard added two hits apiece.

Mergen's two-run single and Lindstrom's RBI single got the Spartans within 11-7 in the fourth inning.

Another two-run single by Mergen and Schuster's sac fly got the Spartans within 11-10 in the sixth inning.

Things didn't get off to a great start for the Spartans in the seventh inning as the first batter up struck out. Jago, Thompson and Heinen followed with singles, but Jago was thrown out at the plate on Heinen's hit. Mergen was then intentionally walked to load the bases and set up Lindstrom's game-winning hit.

The Spartans (2-4, 1-1) are at Duluth East at 4:30 p.m. Thursday then at the Becker Tournament for three games on Saturday.

Girls Soccer

The Spartan girls soccer team defeated Baldwin-Woodville 4-0 Tuesday evening to improve to 6-2-1 overall and 6-5-1 in the Middle Border Conference.

Kelsey Hansen and Amber Holt both scored a pair of goals for Superior.

In goal, Kristina Manion earned the shutout with six saves. Kayla Fischer had 10 saves in a losing effort for Baldwin-Woodville.

The Superior junior varsity team also won Tuesday, 5-3

The SHS girls also fell to the Rice Lake Warriors 5-0 Saturday in a non-conference game at Rice Lake.

The Spartan girls are now 5-5-1 overall and 5-2-1 in the Middle Border Conference.

Rice Lake's Kara Komoto had three goals and an assist to lead the Warriors.

Rachel Heinecke earned the shutout in goal with six saves for the Warriors, and Kristina Manion finished with 11 saves for Superior.

The SHS JV fell to Rice Lake, 1-0.

Softball

The SHS softball team fell to 1-4 on the season with losses of 5-0 and 4-3 Friday evening at Eau Claire Memorial.

The Spartans managed five hits in the opener, two each by Taylor Thompson and Kaitlyn Mergen and one by Kari Miller.

Alison Wainionpaa suffered the loss, allowing five hits with four strikeouts and 10 walks. Morganne Gruber was the winning pitcher for the Old Abes, allowing five hits with four strikeouts and one walk.

Superior scored all three of its runs in the second game in the fifth inning.

Emily Hansen started things with a double, Miller singled and Jessica walked to load the bases. After Hansen was thrown out at home on Thompson's fielder's choice, Mergen knocked in two runs with a single and Savannah Oak, a courtesy runner, scored on Taylor Nelson's single.

Syd Neville scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh inning to give the Old Abes the lead. After reaching on an error, Neville scored after two base hits and a close play at home on a throw from right fielder Rachal Fregin.

Mergen once again led the Spartans with two hits and two RBIs.

Thompson suffered the loss for Superior, allowing nine hits with six strikeouts and three walks. Miranda Ritter was the winner, allowing 10 hits with three strikeouts and three walks.

SPARTAN SPIN: The SHS JV won both games 16-5 and 6-1. Shannon Johnstad and Kaitlin Heinen were the winning pitchers.

Rainouts

Tuesday's high school boys tennis between the Superior High School Spartans and Duluth East has been postponed until 4:15 p.m. Wednesday at the SHS courts.

Tuesday's Lake Superior Conference track meet at Wessman Arena has been canceled and won't be made up.

Baseball

The Spartan baseball team lost to Duluth Denfeld 4-0 Tuesday afternoon at Morrie Arnovich Field.

Superior had just two hits, an infield single by Nik Mattson and a bunt single by Trent Olson. Both hits came in the seventh inning.

Spencer Severson and Dane Sislo pitched for the Spartans, now 4-5 overall and 0-3 in the Lake Superior Conference.

Carter Bagley struck out four in a winning effort for Denfeld, which scored all of its runs in the fifth inning. Jerrod Amundson, Derek Meger and Jordan Buetow had RBI singles for the Hunters (5-6, 1-2).

The Spartans play Duluth Marshall at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at UMD then play a doubleheader at 10 a.m. Saturday at Chippewa Falls.

Boys Golf

The Spartan boys golf team finished ninth at the two-day Grand Slam Invitational last weekend in Grand Rapids and Coleraine. Friday's play was at Pokegama while action moved to Eagle Ridge on Saturday.

Grand Rapids won the team title with a score of 612. Cambridge was second at 655. Superior's final score was 701.

Chris Rochon was Superior's best golfer with a 159. Daniel Burger was 27th (85-86--171); followed by Nolan Holcombe, 32nd (88-86--174); Matt Hinaus, 59th (99-100--199); Brady Utionen, 60th (97-103--200) and Paxton Paine, 62nd (100-101--201).

The Spartans will compete in the Scott Miller Invitational Friday and Saturday at Hayward.
