The Superior High School baseball team got back into the win column with a 12-2, six-inning win over Duluth Marshall Thursday afternoon at the Minnesota Duluth field.
The Spartans, who opened the season with four straight wins, snapped a three-game losing skid with the win to improve to 5-5 overall and 1-3 in the Lake Superior Conference.
Jordan McDonald was the complete-game winning pitcher, allowing four hits with two strikeouts.
The Spartans had 10 hits, led by Nik Mattson, who was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Dane Sislo added a three-run double; Grant Rindal had two hits and two RBIs; Spencer Severson had a hit and two RBIs; and Taavi Mattson, Trent Olson and Jordan Hughes all chipped in with a hit and RBI apiece.
The Spartans are back in action at 10 a.m. Saturday with a doubleheader at Chippewa Falls (8-6 overall, 4-2 Big Rivers Conference). Superior will then play at Proctor (5-3, 0-2) at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Marshall (3-2, 1-1) hosts Greenway at 11 a.m. Saturday.
JV Baseball
The Spartan JV defeated Esko 6-2 on Monday. Taavi Mattson started and got the win for the Spartans, allowing two unearned runs in five innings. He also gave up one hit with eight strikeouts and two walks. Pete Guski pitched two scoreless innings of relief. Logan Griffith drove in two runs with single while Grant Hanson and Peyton Flanders doubled.
The Spartan JV lost to Denfeld 13-4 on Tuesday. In three innings Grant Hanson allowed seven runs (two earned) on four hits while striking out two and walking five. Phil McCotter, Morgen Moen, and Tyler Lehikoinen pitched in relief. The Spartans had six hits with Hanson and Will Mullens picking up doubles while Sean O'Neill, Kyler Krob, Lehikoinen and McCotter each getting a single.
Girls Soccer
The Spartan girls soccer team defeated Baldwin-Woodville 4-0 Tuesday evening and then fell to Amery 5-2 on Thursday.
Superior now stands at 6-6-1 overall and 6-3-1 in the Middle Border Conference. Amery improves to 6-4-1 overall and 6-2-1 in the conference.
In Thursday's game, all of the scoring came in the first quarter. Amery scored the first five goals of the game, with three coming from junior Ashley Waalen.

Superior scored its first goal at 37:09 when Cassie Hanson scored unassisted. Amber Holt then added another unassited goal for the Spartans two minutes later for the final score of 5-2.
Maggy Luer finished with seven saves to earn the win for Amery, while Kristina Manion suffered the loss in goal with seven saves.
The Spartan JV team defeated Amery 3-1.
Against Baldwin-Woodville, Kelsey Hansen and Holt both scored a pair of goals for Superior.
In goal, Manion earned the shutout with six saves. Kayla Fischer had 10 saves in a losing effort for Baldwin-Woodville.
The Superior junior varsity team also won Tuesday, 5-3.
Superior's next game is Tuesday at Somerset. Monday's home game against Ashland has been changed to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, May 11.

Softball
Duluth East defeated the Spartans 1-0 in 10 innings Thursday evening in Duluth.
The Greyhounds' winning came when Jamie Whitlinger walked, moved to second on an error and scored on Melissa Toland's singled to the gap in left-center field.
Both teams had chances to score, including the Spartans, who had runners in scoring position in the first, second, third, seventh and 10th innings.
East put runners in scoring position in the first, third, fifth, seventh, eighth and 10th innings.
Alison Wainionpaa suffered the complete-game loss for Superior, allowing six hits with nine strikeouts and five walks.
Vanessa Kohl was the winning pitcher, allowing four hits with eight strikeouts and three walks.

Taylor Thompson, Jessica Lindstrom, Rachal Fregin and Emily Hansen singled for the Spartans, who fall to 2-5 on the season.

Wrestling
The Spartan wrestling team recently held its annual awards banquet and coach Bill Gedde handed out a number of awards.
Sophomore Nathan VanErt was named the Rob Urbaniak Memorial Rookie of the Year; Tyler Lehikoinen received the Outstanding Freshman Wrestler Award; sophomore Chandler Oja received the Most Improved Wrestler Award; Sophomore Joey McDonald took home the Most Dedicated Wrestler Award and graduating senior Nick Kirchoff received the Outstanding Spartan Wrestler Award for the 2011-2012 season.
Kirchoff is now third on the Spartans' all-time win list with 95 victories. The coaching staff also recognized graduating senior Ben Regner, who is fourth on the all-time win list with 88 victories.
Kirchoff and Regner were the team's captains this past season.
Hoop camp

The Superior Spartan Boys Basketball Camp runs from 9 to 11 a.m. on June 12-14. The camp is for boys entering grades 7-9 and the cost per camper is $40.
The camp will take place in the Superior High School gym and is limited to the first 25 paid campers.
All participants are required to bring gym clothes and proper shoes. Each participant will receive a camp T-shirt and certificate of participation.

Football
There will be a meeting on May 15 for all current sixth-and seventh-grade students interested in playing Superior/Douglas County Pony Football and for those current eighth-graders interested in playing freshman football next fall at Superior High School.
Both meetings will be during homeroom in the Superior Middle School cafetorium on Tuesday, May 15.
If you are not sure if playing tackle football is for you or you do not have any prior experience, come to the meeting to learn more about the opportunities you have to play Superior Football.

The Spartan tennis team lost to Duluth East 7-0 Wednesday afternoon at the SHS tennis courts and 6-1 to Hermantown on Thursday.
Wednesday's match was scheduled for Tuesday in Duluth but was rained out.
Superior, which lost 6-1 at Hermantown Thurday, will play in the Stevens Point Invitational at 10 a.m. Saturday.
