Girls Soccer

The Superior High School girls soccer team lost a pair of close games this week, losing 2-1 in double overtime Monday at Hayward and then 3-1 to Amery at home on Tuesday.

Superior again found itself fighting from behind after a poor clearance around the penalty box was punished by Hayward, giving the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead.

Superior was once again rescued by one of their talented 10th graders with Abby McCall having patches of success along the right touchline, linking up nicely with midfielder Mary Beth Amys.

Eventually, McCall collected the ball out wide, dribbled toward the goal, and drove a shot into the upper netting to tie the game at 1-1. Contesting another overtime, Superior played with their backs to the wind during the first interval, which ended goalless.

During the second interval, Hayward pushed forward and were rewarded with a shot that skipped by goalkeeper Marissa Foley's fingers for the game-winner.

Once again Tuesday, ideal weather conditions eluded the Spartans, with high winds ruining the mood.

Superior and Amery saw equal amounts of possession during the first half before Spartan forward Abby Johnson cleverly poked in her sixth goal of the season to draw first blood, which was to remain the score through the first half.

Amery had the run of play for much of the second half, aided in part by the wind at their backs and a couple of injuries to the Spartan defense. The advantages allowed Amery score three unanswered goals in the second half for the win.

The SHS boys tennis team fell to 3-6 on the season with a 5-2 loss at Duluth Central Thursday.

Superior's wins came in doubles where Bobby Berchild and Sean Hoff won the No. 2 match and Dan Kolenda and Kyle Walkowiak won at No. 3.
